Made Smarter backs 400th tech project

Since its launch seven years ago, Made Smarter has provided £7.4 million in matched funding, unlocking £26 million in digital investment across the region. The programme’s impact extends beyond finance, supporting over 1,850 new jobs, upskilling 3,300 existing workers, and generating a projected £276 million boost to the local economy within three years.
“Reaching our 400th funded technology project is a proud milestone for Made Smarter and a powerful demonstration of what manufacturers in the North West can achieve with the right support,” said Donna Edwards, programme director of Made Smarter. “What excites me most is that this is just the beginning. With every new project, we’re building a stronger, smarter manufacturing base better equipped to meet the challenges of tomorrow.”
The latest wave of companies to benefit from Made Smarter funding spans multiple sectors. In furniture and joinery, Creative Joinery + Design in Brampton is among those to receive support. Co-owners Peter and Christopher Johnson praised the impact of large-format 3D printing: “It increases our production capacity, gives us the confidence to explore new markets and offer rapid prototyping services, and will support the creation of new jobs while upskilling our existing team.”
Engineering firms like Preston-based Reverse Engineering North West Limited (RENWL) have also received funding. Managing director Paul Bimpson said: “Investing in the CNC fibre laser cutting machine means we can bring a key subcontracted process in-house, improving efficiency and creating a new subsidiary. This will generate up to five new skilled jobs here in Preston.”
In the food and drink sector, Mohammad Idrees, managing director of condiment-maker Blazing Limited, added: “Its contribution towards our investment in automation is a pivotal step in our growth journey.”
Other sectors represented include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, packaging, printing, and sustainable consumer goods. John Pattinson, owner of The Eclectic Lifestyle Company, noted: “Technology is a catalyst for our ambitions, but it's our people, family and trusted colleagues, who are driving this change.”
Made Smarter’s support goes beyond funding, offering digital transformation workshops, technology advice, leadership training, and a digital internship programme.
