The UK manufacturing industry has a productivity problem. When compared with major competitors, like the USA, Germany and France, our productivity lags, despite putting in the longest hours in the EU.
Manufacturers in the UK and Ireland are more willing to adopt the latest technologies with the aim of improving productivity — but installing new equipment is not enough. Manufacturers need to create a list of pain points specific to their business, set some outcomes they want to achieve and effectively use the data they collect if they want to make the changes that will add real value to their business. In his talk, Mike John, founder of industrial metrology supplier The Sempre Group, explains why the industry needs to shift its focus from technology to setting outcomes and using data more effectively.
